Results are given below for the 1996 AMC, held on Tuesday 30 July.
There are 11 perfect scores, 4 from Australia,
3 from Singapore and 4 from Bulgaria. The Singapore
perfect scores came from 11,000 entries.
For the first time in its 19 year history, entries in the AMC were
lower than for the previous year. Enrolment numbers 521,542 (from
just over 540,000 in 1995). The main reason for this is industrial
disputation in Australian Secondary schools. Four regions of Australia
saw work bans in place, prohibiting activity outside the basic
teaching process.
For the first time there is a medallist from Brunei and one
from Ireland.
Medals were presented to
successful Australian and New Zealand
students at a function held
in the Australian Academy of Science,
Canberra, on 1 November. Presentations were
made by the Governor-General
of Australia, His Excellency Sir William Deane, AC, KBE.
Manila hosted the presentation to 3 Philippines medallists on 22
October at the Shangri-La Hotel. Guest of Honour was the
Under Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology,
Dr Estrella F Alabastro. Other invited guests included
His Excellency Mr Evan Williams, Acting Ambassador for Australia.
The Brunei
presentation was held at the University of Brunei Darussalam on
25 October. The Guest of Honour at the second AMC prizes and
awards ceremony was Mr. Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj. Abrahim,
the Director of
Aacademy of Brunei Studies, the personal representaive
of Pehin Dato Awang
Hj. Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong, Vice-Chancellor
of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Hj. Abdu Latif also read a speech on behalf of
the Vice-Chancellor. Other
invited guests were, Hj. Mohd Dennis bin Hj. Roslee,
the Director of Schools
and His Excellency Mr. Neal Davis,
the Australian High Commissioner to Brunei
Darussalam. The AMC in Brunei Darussalam has been
organized by UBD and Ministry of
Education each year since 1990.
The Singapore presentation was held at the Australian
High Commission on 29 October with Acting Australian High
Commissioner His Excellency Mr David Pearce as Guest
of Honour.
A Bulgarian presentation was made in Sofia in early 1997. The Irish presentation
was held in the Australian Embassy in Dublin in early 1997.
