Four Medals, including Gold, at 2002 International Mathematical Olympiad

Stewart Wilcox, of North Sydney Boys High School, has won a Gold Medal representing Australia at the 2002 International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Glasgow.

Australian students were successful in winning a total of 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals, a Bronze Medal and an Honourable Mention.

Stewart scored 31 points of a possible 42, achieving 4 complete solutions, and was placed equal 19th, among 479 of the world's elite students from 84 countries.

In the IMO Gold Medals are awarded to students placed in the top one twelth of students. In the history of participating at these Olympiads Stewart is only the ninth Australian student to win a Gold Medal.

The two winners of Silver Medals were Nicholas Sheridan, of Scotch College, Melbourne, and David Chan, of Sydney Grammar School. Yiying (Sally) Zhao, of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Melbourne, won a Silver Medal while Gareth White, of Hurlstone Agricultural High School, Sydney earned an Honourable Mention for a complete solution. White and Andrew Kwok, of University High School, Melbourne both narrowly missed Bronze Medals, being within 1 and 2 points respectively.

In the Mathematics Olympiad, 6 students from each country attempt 6 problems, each worth 7 points.

Australia's score is 117, placing it in 26th position of 84 countries.

Team Leader, and Director of Training, was Dr Angelo Di Pasquale, of the University of Melbourne. Deputy Team Leader was Mr Daniel Mathews, of the University of Melbourne.

China was placed first with Russia second and the USA third. Three perfect scores were achieved, two from China and one from Russia.

The Mathematics and Informatics Olympiads are administered in Australia by the Australian Mathematics Trust and receive support from the Federal Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training.

The participation at the IMO is also supported by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers and the Australian Mathematical Society.
