Greenaway wins first Silver Medal by Australian at an International Olympiad in Informatics

David Greenaway, a student at Mosman High School in Sydney, has become the first Australian student to win a Silver Medal at an International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).

Greenaway achieved this at the Olympiad held in Yong-In, South Korea, between 18 and 25 August 2002.

The Olympiad is the premier international competition between students at Computer Science. In the tasks students are asked to write programs to solve problems which are previously unseen.

The team, selected as the result of a national competition and work at a training camp was David Ananian-Cooper, St Peters College, SA, Clarence Dang, Caringbah Selective High School, NSW, Alex Flint, Glenunga International High School, SA, and Greenaway.

In the Informatics Olympiad, 4 students from each country attempt 6 problems, each worth 100 points. The problems are highly challenging by any measure and any score is a significant achievement.

Details of the tasks at the 2002 IOI can be found here.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is rapidly becoming the largest of the International Science Olympiads. This year 78 countries participated, just behind Mathematics, which attracted 84 countries. International Science Olympiads are also held in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and Australia participates in all.
